Driveways and access

Plan a gravel delivery before the truck reaches the property.

A practical guide to gravel delivery, spreading, driveway quantities, truck access and the information a local provider needs before quoting rural-property work.

The short answer

What should you know before contacting a provider?

A useful gravel request includes the driveway dimensions, desired depth, material preference, delivery location, current surface condition and whether the truck can safely enter, turn and unload. Separating delivery from spreading also makes estimates easier to compare.

Plan the scope

Three questions to answer first

01

How much gravel might the project need?

Measure the length and width of each area and choose a planning depth. Convert the resulting volume into tons using a material-specific density, then allow for compaction, low spots and waste. The calculator below provides a planning estimate—not a supplier ticket or final quote.

02

Can the delivery truck reach the work area?

Identify gate width, overhead branches or wires, soft shoulders, narrow turns, slopes and a safe unloading location. A provider may recommend a different truck size, staged delivery or tractor spreading when direct dumping is impractical.

03

Is this delivery, spreading or driveway repair?

A material-only delivery is different from tailgate spreading, tractor spreading and rebuilding a failed driveway. Describe drainage problems, ruts, mud, soft base and existing aggregate so the provider can understand the actual scope.

Contractor-ready details

Information to gather

  • Measured length and width of every area
  • Planning depth and preferred aggregate, if known
  • Photos of the entrance, driveway and problem spots
  • Gate width, turns, slopes and overhead clearance
  • Delivery-only, spreading or repair scope
  • County, property ZIP and desired timing
Next step

Turn the notes into a request.

Include the property county, photos or measurements you have, access limitations and the result you want. A provider still needs to inspect or confirm the actual site.

Common questions

Gravel delivery FAQ

How many tons of gravel do I need?

The total depends on the measured area, depth, aggregate density and site conditions. Use the gravel calculator for a planning range, then confirm the order with the material supplier or contractor.

Can gravel be spread directly from the dump truck?

Sometimes. Tailgate spreading depends on truck access, surface stability, slope, room to maneuver and the driver's operating rules. Tractor spreading may be the safer or more controlled option.

Does Rural Property Check sell gravel?

No. Rural Property Check organizes the request and may connect it with a reviewed local provider when an appropriate route is available.
